“We built Project Serotonin for ourselves, our friends, our families and the world we care about”

"I firmly believe that Project Serotonin, with its novel approach to democratize science and ensure measured health outcomes using precise, hyper-personalized supplementation and empowered user participation through the platform - is the future."
He firmly believes, there is sufficient critical evidence supporting the idea that health and wellness are not achieved via a single product or intervention(be it pharmaceutical, nutraceutical or lifestyle), neither is it possible through a single behavior or a specific life-style change alone. There is no magic bullet or compound today that can promise extending lifespan with a good health span. Finding synergies is the key - meaning that a highly personalized and balanced combination of Nutrients + Lifestyle adjustments, periodically monitored and optimized over a period of time has the greatest impact on health and mortality.
Way too often the physical and mental results of supplementation are not scientifically measured but left to be evaluated by an individual via standards mostly associated with emotional and psychological state of mind. Hard data analysis versus sense data interpretation allows us to reliably evaluate the real effectiveness of the adopted supplements and lifestyle changes. Moreover, very frequent sampling and blood biomarkers monitoring guarantee statistical significance to the inferred model used to guide the customer towards optimum personal results.
“At Project Serotonin, deep science is at the core of our platform, providing users with precise and personalized wellness programs that deliver desired health outcomes. By leveraging cutting-edge research and data analytics, we are able to translate complex scientific studies into easy-to-understand recommendations for our users.”
Her work on novel cellular endocytic pathways has been published in Developmental Cell. Experimental research on cell lines led to the discovery of a novel, CDC42-regulated pinocytic pathway that is important for endocytosis of nutrients like Vitamin B9 (Folate) & Vitamin C. This pathway may also be exploited by pathogens for accessing subcellular compartments. This work also emphasizes the functional roles of lateral membrane organization of glycolipids, cholesterol & sphingolipids into membrane rafts that create sorting platforms leading to distinct endocytic pathway.
Dr. Shefali has worked with various organizations post her doctoral research. Her passion for translating fundamental scientific knowledge into end-user products led her to work with companies like Strand Life Sciences. With Strand Life Sciences, she has championed the practical integration of genetic diagnostics in gynecology and oncology. She and her team created knowledge products like case studies, periodic publications and scientific workshops for oncologists to help them assimilate the genetic diagnostic tests and programs developed by Strand Life Sciences, into their clinical practice. Additionally, her team also developed a patient support program for lung cancer patients. This entailed patient education, periodic support and timely reminders for oncotherapy and genetic testing using liquid biopsy.
She has created training collateral (Off- label uses of Botox for McCann Singapore), Herbal monographs for FRLHT, university- level textbook and examination collateral for Pearson publishing and medico-marketing collateral for hospitals and med-tech companies . She also holds 4 IPs for novel products like a non-toxic hair color system, a food preservative protein and inhalable formulations to stop respiratory viral infections. Her publications have been extensively cited.
"I think Project Serotonin is one of the most exciting consumer health tech start-ups in the world at the moment. As a clinician and scientist, I can see the enormous value they bring. The focus on science-based personalization without falling into the trap of supplement manufacturing will be one of the strong USPs of Project Serotonin."
As a clinician, Dr. Sagner has spearheaded interventions in the field of endocrinology and cardiometabolic prevention such as the use of GLP1 agonists in Europe. He is the current editor-in-chief of Progress in Preventive Medicine, a peer reviewed journal for P4 medicine--a new approach that is predictive, preventive, personalized and participatory, known as P4--and systems biology-based prevention. One of his interests is closing the gap between clinical practice and public health to promote more effective and patient-oriented care and preventive interventions. For that he has collaborated with many NGOs such as the World Heart Federation (WHF), the World Obesity Federation, and the World Health Organization (WHO), where he established the ‘cell to community’ approach in prevention, which maintains that addressing lifestyle-related diseases at the individual level can have vast public health ramifications.
He works on the convergence of systems biology and consumer-driven healthcare to transform medicine from its current reactive approach to P4 medicine, which the journal of Future Medicine describes as systems-level approach that will “will make disease care radically more cost effective by personalizing care to each person’s unique biology and by treating the causes rather than the symptoms of disease.” As a public health expert, he has spearheaded several international initiatives in the field of systems biology-driven preventive medicine working with governments and NGOs.
"With the right strategies we'd be able to trump the genes for high risk propensities and make preventive health a real possibility. At Project Serotonin, we consider genomic input as an important factor to hyper-personalization of our program.”
During her postdoctoral tenure at the Karolinska Institute, she led a cross-functional team in developing a no-flow hearing aid, showcasing her ability to collaborate with engineers, physicists, and medical professionals. This work was published in Nature Materials and was subsequently taken up for commercialisation by Acreo Swedish ICT AB. During her postdoctoral tenure, she has also been the recipient of grants from Vinnova ( Swedish Innovation Bureau) to develop tools for detection of heparin contamination and quantification.
Her career in the industry began at Siemens Research and Technology Center in Bangalore, India, where she played pivotal roles in research and development in the field of in vitro diagnostics. As a Technical Expert, she spearheaded the establishment of a wet lab for in-vitro diagnostic testing and led multidisciplinary technical teams. A few examples of the projects undertaken during this period are assessment of DNA sequencing technologies for Siemens' molecular diagnostics portfolio, development of paper based salivary tests for biomarkers like uric acid and development of a novel OCT (optical coherence tomography) based test for the detection of malaria and blood cell count. Her contributions also extended to patent filings, establishing scientific collaborations and technology benchmarking.Beyond technical proficiency, her professional journey includes editorial roles, recognition as an innovator, and awards for project stewardship and technical contributions.
Throughout her career, she has been recognized for achievements, receiving grants, and fellowships. Her extensive publication record in peer-reviewed journals, including Nature Materials, Genes and Development, and the Journal of Biological Chemistry, attests to the impact and relevance of her research in the scientific community.
